Free money is out there. The state of California offers three types of grants, all based on financial need: Pell Grants (up to $4,700 this year), Chafee Grants (for foster youth, up to $5,000) and Cal Grants (up to $9,700, depending on the type of school).
How to apply: Fill out the FAFSA form, the entry ticket to all types of financial aid and student loans.
Key deadline: To apply for a Cal Grant, you must file a FAFSA and a verified GPA form by March 2.
Where to get help: To assist parents and students, some 500 "Cash for College" workshops are being offered statewide at various schools through February, sponsored by the California Student Aid Commission. Times vary, but most are offered from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Help is available in Spanish.
What to bring: Your driver's license and Social Security number; your parent or guardian's Social Security number; bank account and investment statements; farm or business records; your W-2 or income records; parent's federal income tax return or W-2 forms.
Bonus: At every "Cash for College" workshop, the state is awarding a free $1,000 scholarship to a lucky high school senior.
